Who We Are

Over 35% of the homeless population in America is made up of families with children.  Homeless families are often hidden from our view—they are living in shelters, motels, campgrounds, cars or are doubled-up in overcrowded apartments.

Family Promise is unique in our dedication to keeping families together.  We welcome:

Two-Parent Families
Too many programs accept only mothers and children.

Single Fathers with Children
Few programs offer space for a father and his children.

Single Mothers and their Children
The higest percentage of homeless families are headed by single moms.

Parents with Teenagers
Too many programs will not accept boys over 12 or older teenage girls.

Grandfamilies
    Grandparents raising their grandchildren.

Family Promise of Southwestern Pennsylvania provides shelter, case management and supportive services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to homeless children and their families.  We mobilize over 800 volunteers through local faith congregations and the community who are opening their hearts to help families who are experiencing what may be the worst crisis of their lives.

Families who come to Family Promise lost their housing because they lost a job and couldn’t make rent, because they were living in an abusive household and left for the safety of their children, because they were burned out or flooded, because they were living doubled-up and were put out when conflicts arose, because of an unexpected expense that decimated their finances, because they were living in properties that were unsafe…the chronic lack of affordable housing in our country leaves them with no other option than to turn to a program where they can keep their children safe.  Our families are not what you picture as homeless, they are houseless.

Family Promise SWPA serves families with children regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or military status. We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all families and volunteers.
